Your Questions, Answered

  • We provide trauma-informed therapy using evidence-based approaches, including:

    • Somatic Therapy / Somatic Experiencing - Focusing on body awareness and resolving trauma stored in the nervous system.

    • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) - A structured therapy that helps process and integrate traumatic memories.

    • Polyvagal-Informed Therapy - Supporting regulation of the autonomic nervous system to reduce stress, anxiety, and hypervigilance.

Each therapist outlines their training and areas of specialization in their bio. Learn more about our therapists and the approaches they use here.

  • Somatic Experiencing (SE), developed by Dr. Peter Levine, is a body-based trauma therapy that works with the nervous system. It focuses on releasing survival responses (fight, flight, freeze) that may be stuck in the body, helping restore regulation, safety, and resilience.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based trauma therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they no longer feel overwhelming. Trauma can cause memories to remain stuck in the nervous system; EMDR supports the brain’s natural ability to integrate these memories without requiring detailed retelling.

  • All our therapists are Master’s-level Registered Social Workers (RSW) or Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC), with additional post-Master’s certifications in specialized trauma-focused approaches such as Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, and more. Meet our therapists here.

  • No, all our sessions are conducted online via phone or video, making therapy accessible wherever you are. Book a session here.

    • Removes the inconvenience of commuting.

    • Helps clients feel more comfortable and open while attending sessions from home.

    • Provides a greater sense of confidentiality and privacy vs going into a public office.

    • Creates a more accessible option for individuals with disabilities or health-related barriers.

    • Allows clients to continue therapy even when feeling mildly under the weather.

    • Offers flexibility, including the option to step outside or go for a walk during sessions if that helps you feel more grounded and at ease.

    • Expands access to qualified therapists for people living in rural or remote communities.

  • Trauma physically changes the brain, affecting areas that regulate threat, memory, and reasoning. This can make traditional talk therapy less effective until the nervous system is regulated. Our approaches, like Somatic Experiencing, polyvagal-informed therapy, and EMDR work “bottom-up,” calming the body and nervous system first, so your brain can safely process emotions and memories.

  • Bottom-up therapy is a body-focused approach to healing trauma that works from the nervous system up, rather than starting with thoughts or talk alone. Trauma can leave the brain in a state of hyperarousal (fight/flight) or shutdown (freeze), making it difficult for the prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain responsible for reasoning and reflection) to process experiences.

By starting with the body and nervous system, bottom-up therapies help you:

    • Release stored tension and trauma from muscles and nervous pathways

    • Regulate the autonomic nervous system (reducing stress, hypervigilance, or dissociation)

    • Create a foundation where the brain can safely process emotions, memories, and insights

Approaches like Somatic Experiencing, polyvagal-informed therapy, and sensorimotor techniques are all bottom-up methods that integrate body, brain, and nervous system for deeper, lasting healing.

  • We do not offer sliding scale sessions at this time.

  • Most extended health benefits plans cover therapy services from Registered Social Workers and Registered Clinical Counsellors. We recommend checking with your provider to confirm your coverage. Therapy services in BC are GST/HST free and can be claimed on your taxes.

  • It’s very common to feel frustrated if therapy hasn’t worked in the past. Often, traditional approaches like CBT are top-down, focusing on thoughts and talk, but trauma is not only in the mind, it’s stored in the nervous system and body.

Dr. Peter Levine, the founder of Somatic Experiencing, explains that traumatic experiences can leave the nervous system in a state of hyperarousal (fight/flight) or shutdown (freeze). When the body is stuck in these survival states, the brain, especially the prefrontal cortex, cannot fully process memories or regulate emotions, which makes talk therapy alone less effective.

Bottom-up, body-focused approaches like Somatic Experiencing, polyvagal-informed therapy, and EMDR work by regulating the nervous system first, helping the brain safely process trauma. This tailored approach often helps clients achieve results where other therapy hasn’t worked.
